Pets make the owners heart healthier

This statement, published in the online edition of Circulation, was made by the American heart Association.

According to Dr. Glenn Levine, who heads the Committee that made this finding after reviewing a number of studies, Pets (especially dogs) can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

According to studies, Pets also increase the survival of patients after a heart attack or stroke. However, it is unclear whether there is a direct correlation between pet ownership and better health. Maybe healthier people often prefer to have Pets, feeling able to take care of them.

It is also likely that the greatest health benefit of the owners bring the dog. Their owners are moving more due to the fact that dogs need exercise and active play. As a result of one of the studies, which analyzed data on the 5400 people, it turned out that the owners of dogs involved in physical activity more than all other pet owners, and among them 54% more people that move as much as doctors recommend.

In addition, pet owners are below pressure, cholesterol levels and a lower tendency to be overweight. Also Pets helps to deal with stress.

In his recent study, Gern analyzed the blood of babies immediately after birth and one year later. He was looking for evidence of an allergic reaction, immunity changes, and for reactions to bacteria in the environment.

If a dog lived in the home, infants were less likely to show evidence of pet allergies — 19% vs. 33%. They also were less likely to have eczema, a common allergy skin condition that causes red patches and itching. In addition, they had higher levels of some immune system chemicals — a sign of stronger immune system activation.

“Dogs are dirty animals, and this suggests that babies who have greater exposure to dirt and allergens have a stronger immune system,” Gern says.
