Children who grow up with dogs or in close proximity to farm animals, have a lower chance of developing asthma than their peers. To this conclusion came a group of scientists from several Swedish universities.
Doctors and epidemiologists have collected data about more than a million Swedish children born in the period from 2001 to 2010, and reviewed the cases of 276 000 students. Among them approximately 22,000 children grew up with dogs whose parents brought over a year after their birth. The parents of 950 kids worked on the farm. 11 600 participants of the study were reported to have an asthma attack in the seventh year of life. In the case of schoolchildren, according to scientists, the presence in the house of dogs reduces the risk of developing asthma by 13%, contact with farm animals by 52%.
Also analyzed the cases 379 000 preschoolers. 53 000 of them grew up with dogs, 1700 — close to farm animals. Approximately 19 000 study participants at the time of the meeting had at least one asthma attack, 28 000 fixed additional attack during the observation period. Thus, in the case of preschoolers, the trend persists: stay with the dog reduces their risk of asthma is 10%, getting close to domashnemu by 21%.
